We are now looking for a doctoral student to work in the EU-funded project EU-CoWork: Developing Compassionate Workplaces in Europe for the digital and green work environment to protect employees' mental and physical health and wellbeing. The doctoral student will be employed in the research area of Human Work Science.

Subject description

Human Work Science encompasses research on work environment, technology, production systems, work organization, and other social processes. The focus is on understanding human conditions and needs with the ultimate goal of fostering safe and attractive work environments, and promoting socially sustainable development within working life, industry, and society at large.

Project description

The EU-funded research project EU-CoWork focuses on the development of workplace support for employees experiencing difficult life events related to serious illness, caregiving, dying and death, and on how the conditions for this support can be understood in relation to work organizations and workplace cultures characterized by digitalization and green transition. An important part of your work in the project is to develop and analyze Compassionate Workplaces programs based on co-creative research methods in collaboration with a number of workplaces in northern Sweden. The project involves collaboration with researchers from Belgium, Greece and Austria who are conducting similar studies in their respective countries. As part of the Swedish working group in the above-mentioned project, you will be part of an interdisciplinary research environment and work at the Division of Human and Technology and the research subject Human Work Science.

Work tasks

The doctoral position is a four-year full-time position that involves doctoral level education and concludes with a doctoral degree in Human Work Science. You will have an individual study plan and at least two supervisors. Working as a doctoral student means good opportunities to shape both daily tasks and research questions. The thesis project involves planning and implementation of both theoretical and practical work as well as travel, visits and collaboration with companies and other actors, mainly in Sweden but also in other countries. This includes data collection via e.g. surveys, interviews, observations and workshops, literature and theory reviews, qualitative and statistical analyses and ongoing scientific and popular science presentations of the results. In addition to the above, it also includes collaboration with other researchers, participation in meetings, seminars and conferences (local, national and international), participation in compulsory and elective postgraduate courses, writing scientific articles and a doctoral thesis. There are also opportunities to explore the teaching role by teaching in e.g. the Sociology program and the Engineering Design program.

Skills and experience

For eligibility, a Master's degree (or equivalent) with a specialization relevant to Human work science research, such as sociology, health sciences, human resource management and psychology is required. Experience in studying and analyzing the organization of work, working relations and conditions through quantitative and qualitative methods is a valuable merit. Additionally, possessing knowledge of and a keen interest in co-creative research is also regarded as a merit. Given the communicative nature of the research, a strong proficiency in both oral and written expression in both Swedish and English is essential. Personal suitability will also be taken into consideration.
