About the EU MCSA DN project StraDiVarious

StraDiVarious (Strains, Diagnostics and Variants) (www.

stradivarious.eu) is a European-wide intersectoral doctoral training network focused on emerging bacterial threats – specifically the ESKAPE pathogens (Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter spp). Our goal is to make a difference in the development of next-generation strain-specific rapid diagnostics, and to help find potential drug and vaccine targets.

Work assignments

The doctoral student will study how the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus bind to human proteins and modify their functions. The tasks include using methods in molecular biology, bioinformatics, quantitative and structural proteomics, and structural biology (cryo-electron microscopy) to determine the interactions between various intact bacteria, bacterial virulence factors, and human proteins.

The research group Structural Infectious Medicine (STRIME) is a small team consisting of one PhD student and MSc students, working closely with other researchers in experimental and clinical infectious medicine as well as proteomics. The doctoral student will also collaborate with different partners within the StraDiVarious consortium and is expected to participate in both national and international meetings and conferences. In addition to summarizing scientific manuscripts based on the data generated during the project, the doctoral student is also expected to compile scientific review articles. We are now looking for a curious, goal-oriented, and well-organized individual who wants to train as a researcher. The PhD position is expected to start on September 1, 2026.

The doctoral student may also take part in a limited amount of teaching at the bachelor’s or master’s level.

Qualifications

Requirements for the Position:

• Master’s degree or equivalent, with 240 ECTS credits in a relevant subject such as medicine, biomedicine, or molecular biology.
• Previous knowledge in experimental infection medicine and microbiology.
• Knowledge in molecular biology and protein mass spectrometry or alternatively structural biology.
• Knowledge in data analysis and statistics.
• Strong ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
• Documented experience in scientific work.

Eligibility

Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who- have completed a second-cycle degree- have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or- have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.

The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance.

Type of employment

Limit of tenure, four years according to HF 5 kap 7§. The proposed start date is September 1st, 2026, or as agreed.
