Jobbannons

Luleå University of Technology is in strong growth with world-leading competence in several research areas. We shape the future through innovative education and ground-breaking research results, and based on the Arctic region, we create global social benefit. Our scientific and artistic research and education are conducted in close collaboration with international, national and regional companies, public actors and leading universities. Luleå University of Technology has a total turnover of nearly SEK 2,1 billion per year. We currently have 1,900 employees and 18,700 students. In the coming years, multi-billion investments will be made in large projects in Northern Sweden to create a fossil-free society both nationally and globally.

Subject description

Ore Geology includes the use, setting and mode of formation of naturally occurring economic concentrations of metallic raw materials. The research aims at describing the geological conditions that lead to economic concentrations of minerals, as well as how these minerals can be used for a sustainable societal development.

Project description

Central and northern Sweden hosts several lithium-caesium-tantalum (LCT)-type pegmatite deposits and prospects within Paleoproterozoic metasupracrustal rocks. The project will investigate the genesis of this type of mineral system from source-to-sink, focusing on assessing and quantifying the potential role sedimentary protoliths, metamorphic rocks, and granites have contributed to the enrichment of lithium and other lithophile elements (e.g. Be, Sn, Ta) in the continental crust during different orogenic stages, leading to eventual LCT pegmatite formation during late-stage orogenesis.

The project will integrate:

  • Geological mapping, structural mapping, and bedrock sampling
  • Rock and mineral characterisation using a variety of microanalytical techniques (SEM-EDS/WDS, EMPA, Micro-XRF, LIBS, LA-ICPMS, SIMS)
  • Targeted geochronology studies of sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous rocks (e.g. U-Pb SIMS and LA-ICPMS analysis)
  • Integration of results with regional geological and geochemical datasets

Duties

As a PhD student you are expected to perform practical, experimental and/or theoretical work within your research studies as well as communicate your results at national and international conferences and publishing in peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals. The candidate will also take compulsory and elective doctoral courses and may participate in teaching or other departmental duties (maximum 20%).

A central component of this project is independent field-based geological mapping and sampling. You will, among other things:

  • Plan, organize and execute field mapping campaigns independently, including logistics and safety considerations.
  • Conduct systematic field mapping, structural measurements, and representative sampling of outcrop and/or drill core.

Fieldwork will be conducted in rural and sparsely populated areas of central and northern Sweden (Västernorrland, Västerbotten), often in uneven terrain and variable weather conditions. A willingness and ability to work outdoors for extended periods under sub-Arctic conditions is essential.

Qualifications

We seek a highly motivated candidate with a strong background in economic geology and/or geochemical microanalysis with an interest in mineral systems characterisation. Eligible applicants must have obtained a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Earth Sciences with specialization in economic geology, geochemistry, or a closely related discipline.

Emphasis will be placed on documented skills in one or more of the following:

 - Sedimentology including detrital mineral geochronology

  • Metamorphic petrology including PT modelling
  • Igneous petrology of granites and granitic pegmatites
  • In-situ characterization and geochemical analysis of minerals (major and trace element concentrations, tracer isotope signatures, geochronology).

Experience working in Precambrian crystalline terranes is considered a strong merit. Experience undertaking geological fieldwork in Sweden or similar sub-Arctic environments is advantageous.

The candidate must:

  • Enjoy geological fieldwork and be comfortable working alone in rural areas.
  • Be capable of working independently and taking responsibility for planning and execution of field campaigns.
  • Demonstrate analytical thinking and strong problem-solving skills
  • Be interested in the textural and geochemical characterization of metamorphic and igneous minerals.

-Be able to communicate scientific results clearly in English, both orally and in writing.

  • Have a category B driving license.

Written proof of good English language proficiency is required.

Personal suitability, independence, and the ability to take initiative will be given significant weight in the selection process.
