Safe and efficient ice navigation supported by satellite data

About us 

The Department of Space, Earth and Environment brings together expertise in space, geoscience, energy and sustainability. At the Division of Geoscience and Remote Sensing, we develop advanced methods and instruments to observe and understand the Earth system. Combining satellite, airborne and ground-based measurements with modelling and machine learning, we collaborate globally to monitor environmental change and support a sustainable future. 

About the research project  

The postdoc will work at Chalmers University of Technology in a project funded by the Swedish National Space Agency and managed by the Swedish Polar Research Sectretariate. The project will develop and test new methods to convert satellite data into detailed, operational information about ice conditions. The goal is to improve navigation, reduce fuel consumption and enable safer research operations in the Arctic, where rapid changes in the ice create increasing challenges for both science and shipping. Who we are looking for 

The following requirements are mandatory: 

• A doctoral degree, or an equivalent foreign degree, in radar remote sensing, physical oceanography, electrical engineering, physics or related disciplines. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made  
• Solid background in mathematics, physics and programming
• Experience in processing or analysis of synthetic aperture radar data
• You will need strong written and verbal communication skills in English 
• Good social skills, meaning that you enjoy collaborating with others in an interdiciplinary and international environment 

You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education. 

The following experience will strengthen your application: 

• A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree, obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline
• Experience from sea ice field work or polar expeditions
• Experience in work with oceanographic or meteorological data and models

What you will do 

• Apply, validate and improve algorithms for observation of sea ice drift and deformation with synthetic aperture radar (SAR).
• Participate in field work and expeditions to the Arctic Ocean
• Order and prepare satellite data
• Collect, document and apply validation data  
• Present data and results in journals and reports and at conferences and meetings
• Supervise master’s and/or PhD students
• Possibility to engage in teaching at undergraduate/master’s level 

The position is meritorious for future roles in academia, industry, or the public sector. 

Contract terms  

The position is a temporary full-time employment for two years with the possibility of a one-year extension. 

The position requires physical presence throughout the entire employment. A valid residence permit must be presented by the start date, otherwise the offer may be withdrawn.
