Jobbannons

We are looking for a Doctoral student to become part of our team at the Division of Product Development at the Department of Industrial and Materials Science. Join our innovative team and contribute to exciting research in Sustainable Product Development in a collaborative and dynamic environment.

About us

The Department of Industrial and Materials Science shares knowledge and their vision of technical solutions for the future industry in a sustainable society. Through excellent research, innovation, and education, we contribute to the development of future industrial value chains.

The division of Product Development conducts research and education in innovative and sustainable product realisation. We combine technology, design and user perspectives to create the products and solutions of the future. Our international and interdisciplinary environment offers close collaboration with industry, access to advanced research infrastructure and a strong academic network – all with a focus on innovation and sustainable development.

About the research project

This Doctoral student position is situated within Sustainable Product Development and focuses on how socio-ecological sustainability and value considerations can be systematically integrated into early-stage design and decision-making. The research objective is to support the acceleration towards sustainable and value-creating lifecycle solutions by enabling more informed decisions about both system-level implications and behavior-related impacts already in the early phases. The research is done in close collaboration with both researchers within the Systems Engineering Design research group, at the division and in collaboration with external partners, e.g. manufacturing companies.

Research topics include, for example:

  • how to assess, quantify, and visualize strategic sustainability- and value-driven design criteria in early phases of the innovation process;
  • develop design methodology approaches towards sustainable and circular solutions that account for the interplay between technical systems, human behavior, and different actors across the value chain, including risks related to different behaviors and rebound effects.

Who we are looking for

The following requirements are mandatory:

  • To qualify as a Doctoral student, you must have a Master's degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master’s degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits* in Mechanical Engineering, Product Development, Production Systems, Industrial Design, Industrial Ecology, Industrial Economy, Environmental Engineering, Sustainability Science, Biotechnology, or similar.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
  • for students with an education earned outside of Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted.

The following experience will strengthen your application:

  • industrial collaboration/project
  • sustainability research/sustainability development project
  • publishing academic reports or papers
  • engineering modelling and simulation

What you will do

  • In this Doctoral student project, you will contribute to the creation of novel knowledge and methods, as well as applying emerging and promising results into applied and real industrial contexts to mature and validate impact.
  • The research is done in close collaboration with both researchers within the Systems Engineering Design research group at the division and in collaboration with external partners, e.g. manufacturing companies.
  • It also includes developing the research area through the development and applicability of design strategies, simulation models, and other decision support to go beyond the EU’s Green Deal by addressing how early design can actively shape sustainability outcomes throughout the entire product lifecycle and use phases.
  • Develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing

  • Take courses at an advanced level within the Graduate school of Product and production development | Chalmers
  • The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 percent of working hours

Contract terms

  • The Doctoral student positions are fully funded from start.
  • The position is a fixed-term appointment of four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20%, which extends the position up to five years.
  • A starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (valid from May 25, 2025).
  • Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the entire study period. A valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date; otherwise the admission may be withdrawn.

What we offer

  • As a Doctoral student at Chalmers, you are an employee and enjoy all employee benefits. Read more about  working at Chalmers  and our benefits for employees.
  • A dynamic and inspiring working environment in the coastal city of Gothenburg.
