Jobbannons

Join a team at Chalmers University of Technology with an extensive national and international network in the field of metal additive manufacturing. You will have unique opportunities to develop your skills and knowledge while contributing to a sustainable future through tomorrow’s manufacturing technologies.

About us

The position is connected to the competence centre CAM2 (Centre for Additive Manufacturing - Metal) that is focused on material and process development for powder-based metal AM. The centre is hosted by the Division of Materials and Manufacture at the Department of Industrial and Materials Science.

The Department of Industrial and Materials Science shares knowledge and their vision of technical solutions for the future industry in a sustainable society. Through excellent research, innovation, and education, we contribute to the development of future industrial value chains.

In the Division of Materials and Manufacture you’ll join a friendly, international team passionate about shaping the future of materials and production. Our research spans innovative materials, advanced manufacturing, and sustainable solutions – always with real-world impact in mind, and with strong ties to industry. If you are interested in working experimentally and making a difference in the areas of materials and manufacturing, we look forward to receiving your application.

About the research project

The national competence centre CAM2 (Centre for Additive Manufacturing - Metal) provides a unique possibility for academy-industry co-operation. The centre focuses on material development for powder-based metal AM technologies covering the whole AM chain, starting from the base powder through the dedicated AM process development, tailored post-AM treatment to the final component.

Building on recent advances in processing novel Ni-based superalloys within the CAM2 research portfolio and related spin-off projects, we now take the next step toward additive manufacturing of non-weldable Ni-based superalloys. The PhD project will focus on exploiting state-of-the-art PBF-LB processing, including laser-shaping technology, to achieve defect-free fabrication of high-γ’ volume fraction Ni-base superalloys. It will also involve further development of integrated HIP and heat-treatment strategies to reduce manufacturing time and cost while enhancing material properties.

We are seeking a highly motivated doctoral student interested in powder-based metal additive manufacturing of Ni-based superalloys to help enable hydrogen-capable gas turbines for future carbon-free power generation.

The AM group at the division is one of the largest in Europe, comprising senior researchers, postdocs, and doctoral students. We offer a collaborative and supportive research environment dedicated to advancing metal AM in areas critical to the development of this technology.

Who we are looking for

The following requirements are mandatory:

  • To qualify as a Doctoral student, you must have a Master's degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master’s degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits* in materials science, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, physics or production engineering.
  • You will need strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • An interest and curiosity in the subject as well as good analytical skills will be needed.
  • You will be expected to demonstrate good potential within research including project management and education.
  • for students with an education earned outside of Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted.

The following experience will strengthen your application:

  • Experience and good knowledge of metal AM, metallic materials and materials characterisation are considered as advantages.
  • Skills in CAD, powder-bed fusion technology, materials characterisation, microscopy, and similar, will be meritorious.

What you will do

  • Your major responsibility as a Doctoral student is to perform your own research as part of the research group in CAM2 Centre at Chalmers.
  • Take courses at an advanced level within the Graduate school of Industrial and Materials Science at Chalmers.
  • The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 percent of working hours
  • Another important aspect involves collaboration with academia and industry.

Contract terms

  • The Doctoral student positions are fully funded from start.
