We invite applications for a PhD position that explores the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on Higher Education, in particular within STEM (Science, technology, engineering and mathematics) disciplines.

About us 

You will be part of the division of engineering education research (EER), and a member of our graduate school Communication and Learning in STEM. The division strives to be pivotal in reimagining what excellent higher education in engineering and science can and should be. The aim and objectives of the EER division can briefly be described as:

• To foster an inspiring and safe academic environment that promotes open discussion, creative thinking, and provides space for developing education and research collaboratively.
• To improve Chalmers’ education and contribute to the continuous pedagogical development of Chalmers faculty by offering high-quality courses and research-based support.
• To produce internationally recognized and locally relevant research on the teaching and learning of engineering and science in higher education.

The division scientific work clusters around research on digital teaching and learning as well as critical studies of policies, identities and practices in Higher Education.

The division offers ample opportunities for collaboration and networking, in particular with researchers at the other research division at CLS (Division of Language and Communication), but also within the broader scope of Chalmers and through our strong national and international research networks. As a doctoral student, you will be encouraged to take an active role in this vibrant environment, shaping your project in dialogue with ongoing research and interdisciplinary collaborations.

About the research project  

Artificial intelligence (AI), and particularly the rapid advancement of generative AI technologies, is transforming higher education and reshaping how knowledge is created, shared, and assessed. These developments offer opportunities for pedagogical innovation, but they also raise fundamental questions about the relation between technology, learning and human agency.

The project will contribute to the growing field of Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education by examining the pedagogical, cognitive, social, and institutional implications of AI adoption in higher education. We particularly welcome projects that combine empirical rigor with a reflective or critical orientation. That is, projects that do not only explore what AI can do for learning, but also what its broader consequences are for learners, teachers, and institutions.

The proposed doctoral research may, for example, explore:

• How students and teachers in STEM disciplines use and make sense of AI-based tools for learning, problem-solving, and assessment.
• How AI technologies influence cognitive and metacognitive processes, such as reasoning, conceptual understanding, and self-regulation in learning.
• Institutional responses, governance models, and ethical frameworks shaping the integration of AI in higher education.

We especially encourage research that combines socio-technical perspectives with quantitative methods, such as learning analytics (from e.g. click-stream data, eye tracking, screen capture etc.), surveys, or other large-scale data analysis. However, we also welcome qualitative or mixed-method approaches that can provide rich, contextualized insights into how AI technologies influence learning, cognition, and teaching practices.

Who we are looking for

The following requirements are mandatory:

• To qualify as a Doctoral student, you must have a Master's degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master’s degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits* in: 
• Educational Sciences or a related field with a strong connection to educational technology and one or several STEM disciplines;
• An engineering discipline with a strong interest in research Artificial Intelligence in Education and documented experience in educational research
• You will need strong written and verbal communication skills in English
• Good knowledge of, and strong interest in, quantitative (and/or qualitative) research methods
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail are essential, as the project involves designing and managing demanding data collections.
• for students with an education earned outside of Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted.

What you will do

• Take courses at an advanced level within the Graduate school of Communication and Learning in STEM
• The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 percent of working hours
• Design and conduct literature reviews, research plans, and empirical studies related to teaching and learning in STEM, with a particular focus on the role of artificial intelligence in education.
• Carry out research both independently and in collaboration with supervisors and other members of the research group.
• Communicate and disseminate research findings through peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, seminars, and outreach activities.
• Contribute to the writing of scientific articles, which will form the basis of your doctoral thesis.
• Participate in relevant doctoral courses, research school activities, and collaborations within and beyond Chalmers.
