Jobbannons

We are offering a full-time PhD position in molecular engineering, focused on developing AI-driven methods using live-cell imaging data. The position is based at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The student will join the NEST project Time-Resolved Imaging and Multi-Channel Evaluation of Cellular Dynamics (TIMED) — a 5-year collaboration between Chalmers, Uppsala University, and Karolinska Institute — funded by the Wallenberg National Program for Data-Driven Life Science (DDLS) and the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP).

About us

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), jointly run by Chalmers and the University of Gothenburg, is internationally recognized for research and education excellence. We host ~300 employees from 40+ countries in a dynamic, collaborative environment. Gothenburg, Sweden’s second-largest city, is consistently ranked among the world’s most sustainable and livable.

The project is based at the AI Laboratory for Molecular Engineering (AIME), led by Assistant Professor Rocío Mercado Oropeza. AIME develops machine learning (ML) methods for complex molecular engineering challenges in life sciences and materials design. Part of the Data Science and AI division, the group advances generative models, molecular simulations, and design pipelines for data-driven science. Our interdisciplinary team values rigor, openness, and impactful research. The project is part of the DDLS and WASP initiatives, which aim to make Sweden a leader in computational life sciences and AI.

The PhD student will join the WASP graduate school, Sweden's largest individual research program and a major national initiative for strategic basic research, education and faculty recruitment. WASP focuses on AI and autonomous systems that collaborate with humans, adapt through sensors and knowledge, and form intelligent systems-of-systems. It's vision is excellent research and competence for the benefit of Swedish society and industry.

We seek candidates with the following qualifications:

  • A master's level degree in computer science, computational chemistry or a relevant field. Equivalent requirements apply to individuals with an education earned outside of Sweden, for example a 4-year bachelor's degree is accepted.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Solid knowledge of Python and libraries like PyTorch, Monai, and/or RDKit

The following experience will strengthen your application:

  • Knowledge in deep generative models, AI/ML, microscopy, and/or molecular design
  • Documented track record of research in the area of the project

What you will do

  • Design and implement deep learning (DL) workflows for learning from large-scale imaging and molecular data
  • Develop ML models to investigate cellular responses, particularly in cancer cell lines
  • Develop DL models for molecular design based on time-resolved microscopy data
  • Collaborate with other computational researchers to build better models
  • Collaborate with experimental researchers to validate predictions
  • Present findings at scientific meetings and in peer-reviewed ML conferences

The position includes significant opportunities for collaboration within the TIMED NEST environment.

You will also:

  • Take courses at an advanced level within the graduate school of Computer Science and Engineering
  • Develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing

Contract terms and what we offer
