PhD student position on the regenerative transformation of Swedish housing and building production

Are you passionate about upgrading housing and building production in Sweden while fostering sustainability, circularity, and resource efficiency?

This PhD project aims at investigating how Swedish building production can become regenerative. Regeneration expands on sustainability and circularity and goes beyond climate neutrality towards climate positivity. However, while societally and environmentally critical, regeneration has not been explicitly integrated into building production – until now.

For this position, you need to possess knowledge of the planning, organization, and management of on-site construction production processes, as well as sustainable development. You will also demonstrate independence, creativity, and strong collaboration and analytical skills.

Research environment

The Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering (ACE) at Chalmers University of Technology has approximately 250 employees, encompassing a broad theoretical and practical knowledge base.

In ACE, the Division of Building Design comprises research and teaching on the planning, design, production, use, and management of buildings, with a focus on the relationship between operations, facilities, building tectonics, circular processes, and sustainable development. It involves both new production and the transformation of already existing buildings.

As a PhD student in this Division, you will be part of an excellent research team and an inclusive and international work environment, as well as interdisciplinary collaborations both within Chalmers and with other universities.

Project overview

Regeneration focuses on repairing environmental, social, and economic damage and improving well-being. As such, regenerative building production is expected to improve building practices, businesses, and skills within the planetary boundaries and towards circularity, resource efficiency and net positivity.

In this fully funded PhD position, which is part of the Formas-financed project “FRESH: Future REgenerative production for Sustainable Housing and buildings”, you will:

  • Develop an ontology of regenerative building production by analyzing how regeneration affects on-site praxis, economic structures, and business models and strategies.
  • Explore the technical, on-site, and managerial innovations and tools needed for contextualizing this ontology in Sweden.
  • Perform action research and case studies in construction sites for practically implementing your results.

You will closely collaborate with several social and professional groups (e.g., clients, contractors, policymakers, users), as well as another PhD student within FRESH.

Your profile

Required qualifications:

  • Master’s degree (minimum 240 ECTS) in civil engineering, building production, construction management, or equivalent (e.g., focusing on sustainability and circularity of on-site construction processes), or business, management or social science with experience in working in the construction sector.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Good teamwork and project management skills.

Meritorious experience and skills:

  • Experience in implementing sustainability and circularity in the built environment, particularly in relation to construction processes, policies, or material flows.
  • Familiarity with research or practice at the intersection of building production methods, circular business models, and sustainability transitions.
  • Experience in qualitative and quantitative research methods.
  • Familiarity with the conduct of action research and case studies.
  • Familiarity with the Swedish construction industry context.
  • Proficiency in Swedish (advantageous but not required).
  • Familiarity with using digital technologies in construction, like BIM (Building Information Modelling).

Main responsibilities

  • Participating in the Graduate School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Chalmers.
  • Developing your own scientific understanding and independently driving the research project with the help of the supervisory team.
  • Formulating and designing research studies, collecting data, writing scientific papers and journal articles, and participating in international conferences.
  • Managing contacts with reference groups, project members, fellow PhD students, and other partners in the project.
  • Reporting results to industry and academic forums, as well as open science platforms.

Contract terms

The PhD position is fully funded from the start and has a scoped duration of 4 years. However, depending on the Department’s needs, the position may include teaching in the Master’s Program Design and Construction Project Management (MPDCPM) or performing other institutional duties corresponding to a maximum of 20% of working hours. This may extend the position’s fixed-term employment by up to a year, for a total of 5 years at most.
