About the research project

The recruitment of a doctoral student in Textile Management at the Department of Business Administration and Textile Management is being carried out within the research profile TexAI - Knowledge in AI-driven innovation for circular ecosystems in the textile and fashion industry, funded by the Knowledge Foundation. TexAI is an interdisciplinary research and innovation initiative conducted in collaboration between the research areas Textiles & Fashion and Business & IT. The overall goal is to implement AI-driven solutions in textile engineering, fashion and textile design, textile management and business-oriented IT, with the aim of promoting a green transition in the textile and fashion industry. The project is run in close collaboration among academia, business, and industry.

The doctoral student will be part of the research groups Textile Systems and Computational Intelligence (TSCI) and Textile Value Chain Management (TVCM). TSCI applies a systems-oriented perspective and advanced computational intelligence in studying the complex interplay of production units, technologies and organisational structures within manufacturing and supply chain environments, with the aim of strengthening system performance, agility and sustainability. TVCM focuses on the development of industry structures and business models within textile and fashion companies that enable sustainable value creation for the industry, the environment, and society at large.

Your work tasks

Doctoral studentship employment includes four years of study in order to achieve a doctoral degree. The research studies are part of the project "TexAI - Knowledge in AI-Driven Innovation for Circular Ecosystems in the Textiles and Fashion Industry, funded by the Knowledge Foundation.

As a doctoral student, you will conduct your own education and research up to a maximum of 100% of full time. During your doctoral studies, you will be expected to:

• Conduct research on data requirements, data standardisation and data integration in textile value chains to enable AI-based applications, using methods and models from e.g. operations research, data analytics or artificial intelligence/machine learning.
• Identify, structure and prioritise relevant data criteria and data sources along the textile value chain using multi-criteria decision analysis.
• Develop frameworks and models for standardised data collection, data sharing and data use between actors in textile supply chains.
• Analyse how value chain data can support decision-making related to sustainability and circularity, and how such data-driven decisions can be implemented in industrial practice.
• Develop and apply a scientific conceptual framework based on industrial economics, supply chain management and data-driven decision making.
• Establish and maintain collaboration with relevant stakeholders in the global textile and fashion industry for data collection and validation.
• Collect, process and analyse empirical data using appropriate analytical tools and identify both scientific and practical contributions.
• Writing and publishing scientific articles and reports and presenting research results at scientific conferences and to representatives of the textile and fashion industry.
• Use relevant and creative tools to tailor research communication to different target groups within the project.

Your qualifications

Employment is conditional upon your meeting the requirements and being accepted as a doctoral student. Admission is to the doctoral programme in Textile Management.

To meet the general entry requirements for doctoral studies at doctoral (third-cycle) level, a person must have completed a Master’s (second-cycle) degree, or completed course requirements of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are at the Master’s (second-cycle) level, or in some other way acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or abroad. Special qualifications are required for those who have completed a Master’s (second-cycle) degree in textile management, industrial economics or equivalent competence that is assessed as equivalent.

Other requirements:

• Good knowledge and experience in collecting, structuring and analysing data from supply chains.
• Good knowledge of the textile industry, textile supply chains, stakeholders' objectives and decision-making in supply chains.
• Good interpersonal and initiative-taking skills.
• Ability to work in a structured way and to prioritise tasks.
• Good knowledge of English, both spoken and written.

Merits

• Participated in research on supply chain management, preferably in textiles and fashion or similar industrial sectors.
• Basic knowledge of textile materials and processes.
• Basic knowledge of some software programming.
• Practical experience working in the textile or clothing industry with sustainability production and automation related issues.
• Experience in producing scientific publications.
• Experience in research communication.

Admission and employment

Once you have been admitted to the doctoral programme, you will be awarded a Doctoral Studentship Employment. The initial Doctoral Studentship Employment can be a maximum of one year and can then be extended by up to two years at a time. The total time as a doctoral student employee may amount to a maximum of eight years, but may not exceed the time corresponding to four years of full-time studies at doctoral level. Salary is set in accordance with the university's local agreement for doctoral students.

Type of employment: The position as a doctoral student is full-time for four years in accordance with Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance.
